We all know the old saying ‘It’s never too late’. I always used to feel a slight irritation whenever anyone said that to me, because I couldn’t really take it in. Somewhere deep down, I felt it was too late. Missed that turn. Botched that decision. Too far along in life now for that to happen. Would have, should have, could have… My monkey mind can be a real schmuck at times. And very convincing.
Last year, I broke through all that noise and made some rather scary moves. I felt the fear and did it anyway (as Susan Jeffers’ book suggests). After 18 years in the voiceover industry and a decade of coaching others, it was time to start taking my own advice and step it up a gear. 2015 was a year of new everything: demos, branding, website, headshots, business cards, online profiles, the works. I had to run the gauntlet of financial stresses, crushing doubts, insecurities and an overactive doomsday imagination. But, once I took that first step of emailing a few people to get the ball rolling, I was unstoppable. Each small victory led me to the next and then the next, until I had achieved what I’d set out to attain: a refreshed business model, new tools, web presence, training, direction, attitude, confidence and power. So yesterday, when I opened my email and found that I’d been nominated for a Voice Arts Award, I felt such an incredible sense of accomplishment and gratitude.
Perhaps ‘It’s never too late’ only resonates with those who have proven it to be true. I get it now. It is NEVER too late and I’m living proof. Get out there, dream big, get excited and take the first step. Any step. I promise you, once you start those gears turning, you’ll become a perpetual motion machine.
